Increasing popularity of the breast lift procedure

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has recently published statistics on the mastopexy, or breast lift.  This breast rejuvenating procedure is outpacing augmentation procedures at a rate of 2:1 currently.  Since 2000, the mastopexy procedure has grown by 70%.  In 2013, the newest published data shows that >90,000 breast lift procedures were performed in the U.S. by ASPS member surgeons.  <53,000 mastopexies were performed in 2000.  Today, >90,000 breast lifts were performed, and continuing to increase.

Women are seeking the breast lift to obtain a more youthful look with perkier, more uplifted breasts.  Factors such as age, previous pregnancies, previous breast feeding, weight gain/loss, and gravity contribute to the stretching and drooping of the breasts over time.  This outpatient procedure, which lifts the breasts to a more youthful position increases the fullness of the upper pole of the breasts, giving a more aesthetically-pleasing appearance of the breasts.  In addition, the nipple-areolar complex, which often widens and stretches over time, can be reduced and lifted to an appropriate position at the most projecting part of the breast.  This procedure has high patient satisfaction with minimal morbidity.

Breast augmentation continues to be the most popular procedure performed by plastic surgeons in the United States, but the breast lift is continuing to climb for the aforementioned reasons.  The procedure may be combined with implants to add additional size and fullness.  Learn more about the mastopexy procedure and view some postoperative results.  Discuss with a board-certified breast specialist for more information on the procedure itself.
