About Liposuction

Liposuction, also called liposculpture, remains one of the great advances in cosmetic body contouring surgery. It has been around for more than 20 years and, when performed properly, is very safe and highly effective. This procedure is more popular than ever, thanks in large part to the many advances that have made it safer, more effective, and more comfortable.

Benefits of Liposuction

Our surgeons perform liposuction to provide a variety of benefits for men and women, including:

  • Removing unwanted fat to reshape areas of the face and body such as the abdomen, back, hips, thighs, arms, legs, and even the face and neck.
  • Defining the 6-pack muscles with abdominal etching.
  • Harvesting fat for a variety of aesthetic procedures including facial rejuvenation, natural breast augmentation, and buttocks shaping.
  • Improving the results of other procedures such as facelift, tummy tuck, and Mommy Makeover.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

Our liposuction procedures usually range from $4,000 to $10,000. If we combine liposuction with another procedure, the total cost will likely be less than if the procedures are performed individually. Although very popular, liposuction is serious surgery; therefore, it's important to choose your provider based on credentials and experience, not price. Your health and appearance are far more precious than saving money.

Your Liposuction Procedure

Our surgeons typically perform liposuction using IV sedation or general anesthesia, which is delivered under the care of a board-certified anesthesiologist. In most cases, liposuction is an outpatient procedure, so the patient can return home the day of surgery.

There are many liposuction enhancements available, including those that use vibration, ultrasound, or laser energy to make fat removal easier. All forms of liposuction surgery involve injecting tumescent solution into the fat to numb the area and make the targeted fat firmer. The surgeon then suctions the fat out with a long, thin tube called a cannula through very small incisions that are only a few millimeters long. The tumescent technique improves patient comfort, decreases bruising and swelling, and allows for more precise fat removal, even in smaller areas.

What to Expect During Recovery

After liposuction, treated areas are wrapped in elastic compression bandages to minimize swelling and encourage healing. You need to wear these bandages consistently for the first 4 to 6 weeks.

For approximately 24 to 48 hours after liposuction, the tumescent fluid provides pain relief. Ice packs and oral pain medication can be used to manage any pain, bruising, and swelling in the treated areas. Most patients are ready to return to work after a week, but this timeline varies with the areas treated and amount of fat removed. Typically, any initial numbness diminishes within a few weeks.
